Learing the strings without looking?
First off, this is my first post, awesome site!! im from cincinnati , ohio 25 yrs old and have been attempting the guitar. Ive Been playing (trying) just on and off for about a year. I can learn intros and snippets untill it gets too complicated :) but now im ready to really get into it. My fingers are pretty well worked to hold chords with no pain, and keeping off of other strings to get a good clean sound. However i still have some trouble switching chord to chord cleanly, which im sure is not uncommon. I have been working on training myself to switch chords without looking which has worked to certain a degree, but sometimes fails me. Things would be much simpler if i could train myself to learn the strings (picking, not strumming) without looking instead. but is very discouraging :( Is there any exercises anyone know that may help me? thanx for any help

thank you, but that wasnt much help. There is a section on fingerpicking, but im not fingerpicking, im using a pick. Was just hoping there was a good exercise to get a feel for the strings without looking .

Here's the only exercise I've posted so far. Maybe if you practice with it enough it could help you out.

Well, if you want to be able to switch from chord to chord better, what helped me was playing the chord a lot. The more you use one chord, the more your fingers will adjust to the fingerings. I was learning the song "Over the hills and far away" by led zeppelin and after playing the chords in the song for quite some time, they began to feel natural when i would switch to that certain chord. So the more you play, the easier it will get, and eventually your fingers will be really good at forming the chord. As for learning the strings and picking them. Just practice alternate picking, on scales or easy songs. You will eventually get the feel for the strings the more you play.

make your own excercises. the ones that seem to work the best are the chromatic string excercises, where you go
alternate pick this:
[FONT=Lucida Console]e|----------------------------------------1-2-3-4------------------------------------------------|
b|--------------------------------1-2-3-4---------4/9-8-7-6-------------------------------------|
g|------------------------1-2-3-4----------------------------9-8-7-6----------------------------|
d|----------------1-2-3-4--------------------------------------------9-8-7-6--------------------|
a|--------1-2-3-4-------------------------------------------------------------6\4-3-2-1---------|
e|1-2-3-4--------------------------------------------------------------------------------4-3-2-1|
what i usually do is learn a good song that plays one note at a time and play it over and over
if that sounds too dull for you, here's an alternative:
---------------------------------------12-13-15---
-----------------------------12-13-15-------------
----------------------12-14-----------------------
------------12-14-15------------------------------
--12-14-15----------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------14-15-17-
----------------------------------------------------------12-14-15-----------
------------------------------------------------11-13-14---------------------
--------------11-----------11-12-14-11-12-14--------------------------------
-12-11-12-14----11-12-14----------------------------------------------------

yeah, thats what ive been doing, but it seems like everytime i find a good song to learn in that manner, i end up stuck finishing b/c i can tell the tablature isnt right. Obviously i dont wanna waste my time learning a song if i know the tablature is not accurate. By the way , where do you recommend for the most accurate tabs? thanx for the response guys.
and pure, i do not understand that exercise  (1,2,3,4 - 4/ 9876 fret?)

www.tabrobot.com (tab search engine, like google except for tabs. usually first answer is the best if its not a chord sheet or a bass tab.)

Start on the 4th fret, slide up to the 9 then do 8-7-6.

Try going back and forth between two chords you're having trouble with. Slow at first and then get faster.
