Pay a measly $5 and sign up for a High Bandwidth Subscription here.
You'll get hundreds of video lessons that blow away any private instruction.
Start here in the beginners section and work your way up.

http://www.guitartricks.com/guide.php

Then check out some of the Guitar Tricks instructors on the home page.
There's about 150 free lessons to try out too.

Sure you can learn to play the guitar without lessons. I've been playing for around 11 years and haven't had the first lesson. I picked up a chord book (already had a good understanding of music from playing the piano and trumpet) and went from there. I found this site some years later, and it has helped me out a lot. There are some amazing guitarist here (especially Mr. Schmange who posted above me). If you have any questions, feel free to post them here in the forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to the guitar!

patience.. patience. and keep your guitar out.. so you can see it everyday. If you but it up it is easy to forget about it.

actually, i did it the opposite way.

becuase i learned from tabb books, all that i really needed to know was powerchords and such, so i just worked on those- i had no need to do chords.

but thennn when i got better, and someone threw me a chordsheet (i think it was cumbiya or something  ) i was somewhat stuck. thats when i started on chords...and then i came across this site! :D
