dude, I love my ibanez GRX40!! it's a great guitar! back in the day when I was buying my first guitar, I picked out that one solely on looks, but nowadays I can appreciate it for the fine instrument that it is. I mean, it could use some work to make it awesome, but considering the price, it's an amazing guitar. this is why I'm considering getting a second one and fully customizing it.

I'm sorry but why not trick out the one you got now unless you want another color or something. You could probably buy new pups for the cost of another guitar.

I have two black 1984 Yamaha SBG1000 guitars. They started out identical. I bought one new in '84 and installed a DiMarzio Dual Sound at the bridge and a DiMarzio SCHB at the neck in 1986. I also modded the switching. I use D'Addario EXL115W strings on it.

A couple of years ago, I saw a black 1984 Yamaha SBG1000 listed in an eBay auction. I got it. I kept it stock for a while, but then I modded the switching the same way as the first SBG, and I installed a DiMarzio Tone Zone at the bridge, and a DiMarzio PAF Pro at the neck. I use D'Addario EXL110 strings on it.

Both guitars have the qualities that I demand from a guitar. The difference in pickups and string gauge makes them just different enough to give them slightly different character. I don't think I'll ever part with either of 'em.

for sentimental reasons mostly, it's my first guitar, I don't want to alter it.

as for buying another one, I'm undecided as to buy a guitar and mod it, or attempt to build my own guitar from scratch (which I got several books on the subject of for christmas, for the sole reason that I wanted to build my own, and also to try to decide if a career in luthiery was right for me ;))

Oh yeah that's fine the way you did it LATS. What I got out of 6strngs post was he was going to buy another just to trick the new one out. Yeah I wouldn't mind having another LP and building it a little different than the one I have now. Sorry 6strngs for being close-minded. :o

I wouldn't mind taking a shot at building a guitar either. I wish I thought of it in school. It would have been a kickass wood shop project. Come to think of it I'm on first name terms now with the shop teacher. I could probably get in there if I asked the right way. I understand the sentimental reasons thing. My cheap little Epiphone will never see better days.

My friends and I built dulcimers in school last year. Mine is the only one that works, as far as I know. I call it Jebsley.

Actually, my dulcimer works, it's just got a bent nail on the bridge that I've yet to fix.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

Later in the evening
As you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers
Ringing in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette
Rememb'rin' what she said

My 1984 Yamaha SBG1000 guitars looked like this when I got them.

The pic is from this >eBay< listing. 40 more pictures! This particular one is definitely a 'player', but you tend to forget about nicks and scratches when you hear how good they sound.

well, probably a couple million to invest in research of a time machine to take you back to the 80's when you could actually find one in a shop.

these things are rare on e-bay, probably 1000 times rarer to find one in a shop.. but if you do.. I'd say jump on it! especially if it's as good as lats says it is!

... which is why I bought my second one as soon as I saw it on eBay.

This >SG700< doesn't have a maple top, but you can see the quality that went into these guits.

If you're really curious, browse the Harmony Central reviews. There's lots of SG and SBG reviews.
