I do a lot of playing standing because I get into it and I just jump around and sometimes cry....... I found it very difficult to play solos with my strap as low as it needs to be to not make me look like an idiot. I watched the only live footage of Randy we have today and even HE played with his strap very low. I realize the proper way to stand and play is with the right elbow bent about 90 degrees and looking very NOT COOL. What strap length do you guys play with standing up?

I have the bottom of the body a little higher than my crotch, that seems good for playing and its not attached to your breasts.

About the same as sitting position. Who cares about looking cool?

I'm with him. I'm for comfort and versatility before I worry about what anyone thinks about my appearance.

just play the thing wherever you feel comfortable sod how cool it looks. I can't play sitting down for too long 'cos it hurts my back so I play standing most of the time with my guitar in front of my waist.

I agree with you but it's just that my drummer and rhythm guitarist are trying their damndest to get me to look cool on stage. And it really topped it off when I saw Randy Rhoads playing like that.

I keep my guitar slung centered around belt buckle level. That's low enough to look decent but high enough that my wrists don't hurt.

im with hammurabi in where i play.

but if you wanna do some fun stuff that looks cool and doesnt matter how high (or low) your strap is, you could try some of the following:

1. if you are on a stage, you can sit on the apron (the edge) of the stage and play the solo like that. people standing/in the front row love that.

2. lay on your back and play!

3. put your guitar up on your shoulder and play

4. figure out an ingenious way to get your strap pulled up a little bit before your solo, then back down afterward

I don't think low-slung guitars look cool. I think it looks like the players have 'jock itch'. :p

I'll do just that. And then I'll kick them in their shins and call them ugly.

John Petrucci wears his guitar at his breast and look at those Asians go nuts on the dvd's. Even he admits "I already wear my guitar too high to look cool", but their live show is uncompromised as far as accuracy goes, which ultimately is better than looking cool.

yeah, but if you play your guitar high, you gotta get your bass and other guitar to play high too. then that would be sweet.

Go ahead and sling it low, it will sacrifice a lot of your ability to play, but I guess that doesn't matter to your bandmates.

If you wanna play low, for one don't go overboard- if your guitar is below your waist, that's a bit much, and too much strain on your joints as well. But your guitar angle can help a lot too. I play with my guitar pretty low. When I'm playing rhythm, it's at about a 45-degree angle, but when I play leads, it's more like 60 or 70, closer to being perpendicular with the ground. It makes it a lot easier to play leads with you sling your guitar way low.
