Hammering

Hey guys.

I just signed up to guitartricks.com today and im a fairly new guitar player.
At the moment I use an Acustic I want to use either a Bass or Electric eventually when I can afford it. Iv also pretty much been teeaching myself everything I know thusfar about guitars, Which isnt much, anywayz.

Just one thing I wan't to know at the moment is that im having a bit of trouble with hammering is it because its alot harder for acustic or am I doing i wrong im practicing on Tool - Lateralis but I need some tips on hammering becuase I can never seem to get it :(

it is ******* hard to hammer on a acoustic but if u learn to do it pretty well on one it will feels very easy on a electric guitar, i find electrics a hell of a lot easier to play than acoustics
personally i dont think acoustics sustain well enough for hammers to sound good anyway

it is well worth practisin it regularly on whatever instrument you have learning on a acoustic in my opinion will make u a hundred times better on electric even if it doesnt sound very good :rolleyes: just kiddin acoustics sound brilliant in there own context but electrics and hammering always seemed to be a rock/metal/punk thing for me

You can hammer on acoustics no problem, but of course an electric will have more sustain. To hammer on just pluck the note and quickly with force "hammer on" the designated note. Try out some trills to help you further.

high e----4h5p4h5p4h5p4h5p4h5p3h5p3h5 ect. Try other strings as well.

I agree with elklandercc on the point that hammer ons can easily (well not easily but what I mean is it is possible) be achieved on acoustic guitars. It just takes a matter of time to train your finger to hammer on at the right place at the right time.

If you're a fairly new guitarist you will find it really hard to hammer-on because of the high action (space between the fret and the string) and the string tension. You need to strengthen your fingers, which you can either do through lots of practice or getting something like the "gripmaster" (google it).

I think it's a good thing that you're starting on the acoustic like markc2005 said. It's good for improving your technique and finger strength, and you'll find the electric quite easy to get the hang of after that. You will need to get used to the fact that every single mistake is amplified on the electric though.

Thanks guys for all your help Iv been practicing hammering for like a few days now and went to my mates and he let me borrow his electric guitar and now i relise how much easier it is to hammer on an electric cept I get all the strings mucked up :S lol havn't got all my co-ordination in yet hehe

I always had more trouble with pull-offs, not to be confused with pull-outs which is a topic of another thread.

I find them very difficuklt too. I dont know how those jazz guys do it, they pull off so cleanly that it frustrates me.

Anyway yeah, hammering-on on an acoustic is a bit hard. Teh sustain just doesnt last enough to get a good hammer-on effect. I just got myself an electric and i can feel you when you say that you get the strings all messed up. Its cuz the strings are much closer together and i have a tendency to just bunch up on strings. :( Anyways keep going at it.

im also having trouble but i play electric im a beginner but my big question is wil finger patterns such as 1234 on all the strings with up n down picking will that help my finger strength at all :confused:
