Of course you should have a firm grasp on all the notes on the fretboard. Then I would say start off with scales...Major and Minor then move to others based on what king of music you play. This will lead to solo building as well as finding good chord progressions to match solos and riffs. There are good resources on the web that can teach you some simple theory. I used Cyberfret.com. Theory will help you extremely, all great guitarist know a little theory ;) . Yes even Hendrix

you don't need to necessarily understand them at first, but just learn a bunch ( mainly minor scales, pentatonic scale ) and then check out some further theory. I assume you play rock guitar and the pentatonic scale is a GODSEND to a soloist. I also use cyberfret.com. It is just the best site I have found.

music theory can be a bit confusing at first. I found starting small helped me. I read up on how chords where formed and that gave me the base to start understanding how scales were made up.
I found taking it one step at a time really helped. You might find that you struggle with certain bits (or maybe that was just me being slow on the uptake, who knows?) but one day something will just click and you'll be stood there going "ahhhhhhhh!...so THAT'S how it works". Kill Em All's right in that you don't have to fully understand them at first, but it you keep using them it'll all fall into place.
And don't forget, if you found yourself stuck on something, there's tonnes of people on this very forum how have been in exactly the same position and would be glad to help you out.

Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.
