you don't need to necessarily understand them at first, but just learn a bunch ( mainly minor scales, pentatonic scale ) and then check out some further theory. I assume you play rock guitar and the pentatonic scale is a GODSEND to a soloist. I also use cyberfret.com. It is just the best site I have found.
