picking technique and acoustics
i was thinking about gettin an acoustic guitar...there's just one thing i've been worrying about. when picking, i anchor 2 fingers from my picking hand because it feels more comfortable. now i usually play electric, but with acoustics, there is a whole underneath the strings to project the sound. now i have small fingers and was worried that i would not be able to reach all the strings with my fingers anchored down to the body since the whole underneath the strings puts more distance between my pick and the strings...especially the top e string. should i change my picking technique or am i worrying over nothing?

dude, i had the same problem when playing faster lead stuff on acoustic. it takes a little getting used to; i anchor my pinkie on my middle pickup on my strat, its so comfy for me, and theres no pickup to anchor on when i play acoustic. the past 4 months or so ive gotten incredibly better at playing lead on acoustic, and i actually prefer it for some stuff. once you get used to switching string guages (from electric to acoustic) you can get used to playing fast on it, and worry less about anchoring your pinkie. i can play a bit of gwinge malmsteem **** on acoustic to warm me up. after playing lead on acoustic strings, it seems a hell of alot easier on electric.

oh. to answer the question, no technique change is needed. just get used to playing two different "types" of instruments, i suppose. electric is different than acoustic. just modify your technique to acoustic. there are no real bad habits to get into, just make sure youre fingers are most comfortable.

alot of electric players who then play acoustic, tend to sound a bit crap. The picking is so weak! I dont think anchoring is a good idea, especially on acoustic! you cant get the same dynamics and control if you anchor. Then again i wouldnt advise anyone to change anything about their technique unless they know exactly how to do it

Maybe playing acoustic will give you the chance to stop anchoring your picking hand. It may not be 'bad', but it can be limiting - at least in my experience...
Good Luck... :D

I do the same thing except I don't have any problems switching from acoustic to electric. What I do is anchor my pinky and ring fingers when I play on the top three strings (EAD) and the lower part of my palm when I play the lower three strings (GBE). Hope this helps.
