Taking it to the next level
I've played guitar for roughly 5 years and I am a decent player, yet I never learned about REAL music type playing. I don't know about keys, scales, etc. and I want to learn how to basically write solos over rythms I write. I have all along just played tabs and that was the extent of my playing. I want to take my playing to the next level and become a real musician. What steps do you suggest I take to acheive this goal, keeping in mind I have no experience except simply learning popular songs and playing along. Thanks for the help.

Well it depends!!! Do you want to learn to read and study music theory?Or expand your vocabulary with different styles!!! Do you want to become a studio musician?

I don't want to necessarily read sheet music, but rather know how to write music. The main problem right now is, if I were to write some chord progression that I like, a) I don't know what key the song is in and b) I don't know how to write a solo over that progression. I'd also really like to know how to have a jam and actually know what to play rather than doing it by ear. I just don't know any of the techincal aspects of playing guitar, everything I do is just by ear and what "sounds" right.

Dude.. 5 years and you don't know anything about scales?!
I've been playing for about 3 years now.. I have a Epiphone
Zakk "Bulls-Eye" Wylde Les Paul
When I started learning the song "For the love of god" with Steve Vai
I used 2-3 days to get down the intro- all the way to where he starts picking REALLY fast.. that would take a little longer for my fingers to get used to..

i mean congrats for knowing for the love of god well, the intro, but whats your point!! lol people learn at diffrent rates knowing scales doesnt make you a good guitarist i mean sure it helps but i mean too many people hide behinde scales any how, i would say the best thign tht any 1 can do is develope their pitch and let your ears work the scales out for you!!!!
Why doesn't my amp go up to 11, :(

I agree, i knew how to play yngwie songs before learning scales. :p

I do know scales, I know major and minor scales but nothing really past that. And I also believe that my ear has developed very well for not knowing any of the technical aspects of things. Like I said before, I think I am a good player for 5 years, I can play some fairly advanced stuff such as some Yngwie stuff but I just never learned proper music things. I just read tabs and play... :D

oh yeah, well, Zakk Wylde's tour bus broke down in front of my house, he came over to use the phone, and in exchange for letting him use it, he gave me one of his signature guitars and gave me a private lesson so that I can play so fast that my ears can't even comprehend it...

why don't you buy a book on music theory. I ordered the complete idiot's guide to learning music theory. I planned on reading it over this summer but my order hasn't came yet and my break is almost over. :( Oh well, I think I'll take a course on music theory.

I understand how you feel man, i have been playing for only a little over a year now and im stuck in the same position you are...but looking at some of the advice that has been offered in this forum id say it should defintiley give you some good ideas of how to approach further advancing yourself on the guitar.

Someone said "I knew Yngwie songs before I knew any scales."
Bull****. Yngwie songs are scales.

I didn't know they were scales at the time, i just played it from a GP-tab, and most of what he uses are arpeggios anyway. Btw, grow up.
