Soundblaster live 5.1 is cheep, it is not brilliant but will do the job, as long as you want 16 bit recordings anyway. It has line and mic lvl ins and some digital capability. its DACs are poor but hey, it is cheep !
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

Question: I purchased a PCI soundcard, installed it, and it works fine (so far) and everything, however, every time I boot up, Windows still wants to install my old Vinyl AC'97 audio 600 something-or-other driver...even though I've previously removed it from the system settings under device manager. I'm confused. Any ideas?

Not sure what operating system you're running, but if you get into device manager and disable the old 'Vinyl AC'97' job, it will stop prompting you to install drivers.....

If you were using the onboard sound card and you did not disable it in BIOS then every time you restart Windows regardless if removed it in device manager or not the plug'n'play OS you are using will look to install the H/W.
Just go to your motherboard BIOS and under integrated peripheral you should find the onboard sound card just disable it and it will be invisible to the OS...
