im gettin a lot of unwanted string noise when i play. when i lift my finger off a fret it always seems to ring out clearly, especially on the high e string. i've tried articulating my fingers more and lifting the finger off the fret more vertically, but none of them seem to work. any suggestions? i've also been told to mute the strings, but then won't your playing sound a little disjointed if you're muting the string all the time, and won't that be hard to mute the individual strings if you're playing fast?

Just practice slowly and work on playing clean. Then work your way up. Accuracy is better than speed... People would rather hear a clean, slow solo than a fast, sloppy one.... or atleast I know I would. You may be pulling your finger off the string so fast that you're causing it to make the sound of a pull-off. If you try to control your finger a little better when pulling them off... allow a brief moment for the string to quit vibrating, then remove your finger. Once you practice this a lot you will do it naturally.

Yep, just practice, it'll come naturally with time.

in electric, you can use noisegate for filter these noises.
but before using the noisegate, u should be sure "its not your fault".
first u sould get perfect in accuracy, as aschleman says...

when u feel perfect in accuracy, soundgate can be an option for clean sound. but some people think soundgate cut some freqs and destroys the natural feelin...

accuracy yes, but you can mute lightly with your picking hand - it's often essential IMO... Also muting with the other fingers of your fretting hand may be appropriate...

ok, thnx. i think im gonna try muting out the noise with my palm. should i constantly have my palm on the the bridge muting the noise, or just at certain parts where there's a lot of noise?

depends entirely on what you're playing and the sound you want to achieve. When I'm playing fast, I mute a bit all the time to get definition, other times I'll mute selectively....

Have an experiment....

when you're muting it constantly, do you actually want you're hand to rest there on the edge of the bridge or do you want it to sort of float above the strings lightly muting it to cancel out most of the excess noise?

Im still working on it but here“s what I do for legato:
when Im picking one string (i.e. 5) and go for the next one (4) I use the palm of my hand muting the 5. Now when Im going up (from 1 -> 2) I use my middle finger mutin the string I just picked, I mute the first string because my pull offs are not very good. dont know if its right cause sometimes harmonics come out.

I had this same problem when I started playing guitar. It kind of annoyed me but after months passed it went away. I guess you should just keep practicing. Soon you'll be able to play without the noise. Try and muffle the strings you're not using with your fret hand. It seems like that's what my hand is doing when I play.
