travel solution

so i tried the search button, but couldn't find an answer to this:

i'll be traveling to europe for about 3 weeks in july, which is awesome since i haven't been there, but terrible because it'll hamper my guitar playing.

i hestitate to travel with my guitars, not only because i don't want anything to happen to them, but also because it's near impossible to backpack around europe lugging a hardcase.

any suggestions? i've seen some weird looking "travel" guitar tools, but i'm open to anything. how have others dealt with substituting their normal guitar practice iwth the next best thing?

Same here... except I would never get tired of luggin it around... I would probably dump my other luggage before even my most beat up guitar. Besides, think about what great character the guitar will have after backpacking in Europe... you could get stickers for each country you visit and stick on there and BAM, your guitar just got cooler. Sounds like a good time to me!

I get a cheep acoustic that you don't mind getting smashed up a bit.

because:
it is relatively disposable
it doesn't requite an amp or electricity
it is light
if it is stolen you wont be gutted
you can always go busking for food money if you get stuck !

I wonder if it's true that you can buy a second plane ticket just for your guitar?
I've read about people doing it so they don't have to risk putting it in with baggage but never actually tried it.

Of course you can do that. But I don't see why that would be necessary, since the flight attendants usually don't mind putting your instrument in a closet somewhere. Buying an extra seat in only required when the instrument is too big to fit anywhere else.
