Since i still havent scraped the money together to go out and buy an amp, i am taking a this time to think about my choice carefully. I hear that the best way to create great sound is to buy an amp that has an absolutey great clean tone and then get your dirty sound by using pedals. So i would like to know if you have any ideas on what amps might possess great clean tone?
My budget is up to £550 and the amps do not have to be new, they can be ones that i might find on ebay.

Almost any Fender tube amp is going to have great clean tone.

I'm also a big fan of the clean channels on Peavey Classic 30's and 50's.

I got my amp based on its clean tone and i love the VOX valvetronix tube combos. I took my time before getting it but as soon as i played it i knew that i hit on something. Play a few before u buy but consider that one. They have a good price as well.

How about a Roland Jazz Chorus? Supposedly the cleanest amp known to mankind.

Homebrew nailed it. I use a Roland Jazz Chorus and when I want dirt I import it via Big Muff, TS9, or one of those pink danolectro distortion pedals. For some reason RJCs used are very affordable and easy to find. But go to the store and play everything until you find YOUR sound. You'll know it when you hear it. Peace!!

I've got a Peavey Classic 50, and it is very pedal friendly. It's not going to be as 'clean' as the JC120, but if you want a clean tube tone for a decent price, you can't go wrong with a Classic 50, or 30. And I promise volume is no issue at all. I played with my drummer this weekend with just my classic 50 and I was able to play louder than him, and he's a loud drummer. I had to turn it down, because it was just rediculously loud  .

Yeah man roland jazz choruses are an excellent clean sound. My teacher has one and he runs his modler into it, on a high gain setting from the modeler its one of the better sounds i've heard, for a distorted sound and straight into it it sounds sweet- really versitle.
Alas for I am Jay! Reviver of very, very old threads!

First off, hello to a fellow Tele player!!
Depending on your style, there are many choices. The Fender Twin Reverb is an industry standard, and Tele with a Twin can be otherworldly!!! The downfall of the Twin is that it can be "too Much Amp" for some situations. It's LOUD and powerfull, sometimes too much so. The weight can also be a pain in the ass, especially if the gig is on the third floor, there's no elevator, and you have to park 2 blocks away from the gig!!!
For a clean tube amp though, the Twin IS tough to beat; I've used em for Country,Blues,Funk,Reggae,Rockabilly, and Soul gigs from time to time. I'm not really gigging anymore,so I'm using a Fender Deluxe ri. It dosent start to "break up" till the volume gets turned to 6.
Back in the early 90's, I used a Fender Pro 185,(SS Twin, with Drive channels,2-12' speakers, and @ 160 watts). It wasn't exactly tone heaven, but it did the job,and was fairly reliable and road worthy. It had tons of clean headroom t'boot. It took pedals fairly well, and was only about 50lbs. They can be had on the cheap nowadays too.
Just wondering....what styles are you playing??
