1. A very fast solo

2. Riffs, licks, small groups of notes a guitarist employs. Ex. "He's got great chops!"
I want the bomb
I want the P-funk!

My band is better than yours...

Hey don't stop there while we're on the subject...

wailing: another term for exceptional lead work. "That solo wails!"

rip: flawless execution of technique. "He rips through that song."

or straight from my signature...bust a nut: playing with such intensity that your nut breaks (on the guitar...what are you thinking about? )

I'd guess that'd be a picked harmonic (with a whammy dive?) like you hear in every 80's solo. :)

well when i ask my mentor what shredding is he said to me that shredding is a style of music played in most metal genre(usually involves lots of arpeggios sweeps and Dive bombs(i think). u can hear most shreds in vai, malmsteen and in dimebags.

Here's a term for you

sipra= meaning to learn the song by ear
For the love of music not for the love of money!!! :D

J/C what are the ranges for beats per minute? Like what is considered fast playing and what is considered slow?

The term "shredding" is pretty new to me, as a long time player (started 30+ yrs. ago). So shredding simply means fast playing? Does that mean I've been a closet shredder all these years? I can easily do 200 bpm (that doesn't mean what I play sounds GOOD, lol). I always thought shredding was not only fast, but heavily distorted playing. Would you call DiMeola or McGlaughlin shredders?

As far as "chops"- I think that's lingo from horn players. Chops=mouth, or how a horn/wind instrument player mouths their instrument. Simply put, someone with great chops, is a kicka** player.

Yeah, i think both of those players could be explained as shredders...tho certainly not the same vibe as Vai or Satch, certainly no heavy distortion there, more of jazzy shred...but then listen to certain Vai songs...like "for the love of God" that song is not highly distorted...but then I guess it is not really a shred song...but played but one of the greatest shred guitarists...oh we make this so hard!!!

Dive bomb = playing a note on the guitar then using the whammy bar to send the note down... (or up). I think anyway... never have been all that good with the whole whammy bar thing (I have enough trouble with the 6 strings by themselves). :)
