This is for those of you who play high gain or clean, I've recently found that the best way to get better clearer picking technique is not to play with clean tone, it's to play with very little, but noticeable gain, at the level of gain i'm talking about your sustain will be lower than if you play clean, so it will seem easier then when you actually turn on the clean channel.

IT's really, really, realllllllllllllllllllllyyy annoying at first but man does it help.
Alas for I am Jay! Reviver of very, very old threads!

Yep if im trying a new tech I will play it with a clean tone till i can play it perfectly then I can worry about gain and effects later..

I play with the gain on 10 on my overdrive channel and with some care and attension I can play perfectly clear ala Slash on Sweet Child. It takes good technique but its the only way to get that tone.

I will practice stuff for hours listening to music, just playing my electric unplugged. I actually get pretty good volume out of my light strings. So when I put it to sound it's golden

I find to play with a clean channel and a overdrive pedal with zero drive and increease tone and volume, makes it amplified so easier to spot the problems.
WWSD? What would stevie do?
