O.K I know it's a tall order. There must be countless superb gutar solos out there. How about a shortlist of maybe 4 or 5. Here's mine;

1. Mark Knopfler Brothers in Arms.
2.Jimmy Page Since I've been lovin' you.
3. Jeff Baxter Steely Dan The Boston Rag
4. Eric Clapton Live version of River of Tears (One more car one more rider)
5. Stevie Ray Vaughan Tin Pan Alley
6. Eagles Hotel California.
etc
etc
etc

Look forward to reading your selections

Oh... you know. I listen to them here and there. Every so often when I'm not head bangin to some Enya or grinding up a storm with Fleetwood Mac, I'll pop some Cryptopsy in.

DT are known for their harmonization with guitar and keyboards thats one of the reasons they are my fave band!! and yea that DT song Metropolis part 1 has some damn hard solo parts and Change of seasons is another good song that solo is awsome and its a wicked intro to that song way better than One by Metallica infact its one of those intro's that makes u shiver.. its awsome and cool to solo over :D

Oh jeez, Eric Johnson's solos are phenomenal. That guy's an incredible guitarist. I'm particularly fond of Manhattan myself.

Sonata Arctica: mary lou
Sonata Arctica: black sheep
Sonata Arctica: san sabastien (actually a keyboard solo but damn crazy to play on guitar!)
Eric Johnson: live austin city limits version of cliffs of dover (the improv at the beginning is absolutely astounding!)
Dream Theater:As I Am
Wuthering Heights: longing for the woods pt.2 the ring of fire.
Wuthering Heights: Bad hobbits die hard. (nice russian sounding instrumental absolutely insane to learn)

and bassically any keyboard solo transcribable to guitar by any richard ansersson band.

I've got the video for that, makes the song 10 times better.

There's something about improv., doing things off the cuff, live music stuff that really makes a song stand out and stick ini.
Even in popular music. Take this song by Shinehead, "Jamaican in Newyork", which is in fact some sort of cover of Sting's "I'm an Englishman in Newyork". It came out when I was in highschool (shineheads song!! not sting's!! whodya think I am, Lordathestrings???), and I liked it quite a bit. Then a while ago, I got this video, (some reggae thing, I think it's one of those extravaganzas held in Jamaica every year, my cousin loves reggae), and the Shinehead song is in it. It's live. The intro is very different from the original recording. Sung slowly and all that. Makes the song sound very very nice. I don't know if it was rehearsed or done off the cuff, but either way, very nice.

How about...
Ozzy/Randy Rhoads-Mr Crowley
Ozzy/Randhy-Crazy Train
Steve Vai-For the love of God
Pink Floyd-Comfortably numb
Guns n Roses-Sweet Child o Mine
Dire Straits-Money for NOthing
Stevie Ray Vaughn-Little Wing
Pink Floyd-High Hopes(anyone seen this on the Pulse tour?)

and I know it is a common and cheesy choice, but what an amazing solo, especially considering he winged it...Led Zepellin-Stairway to Heaven...I still cant believe that was improvised...bloody Jimmy Page.

ooh ooh, one more...holy ****, just realised that the mother in Married With Children is Leela in Futurama, I'll be damned!..oh, back to the solo list...

Tis,and I know it is more of a riff than a solo, but the intro to Plug In Baby by Muse is amazing...even though it is more of a single note riff.
