Im learning these punk songs right now, stuff liek the sex pistols and stiff little fingers.

The trouble is, even with the treble on 10, bass and mids way low, and presence high, Im still not getting a sharp enough sound.

Is this because I have the straight cab? I have a marshall amp. When I got the straight cab the guy said "good choice bla bla bla bla bla better bass response". i wasnt listening to what he said!!

Can I tamper with the cab to make it less bassy?

dont turn the mids all the way down.

Buy an eq to run your stuff through. thats what I do.

treble's not always annoying unless you just play power chords or shredding on the lower strings or crap like that :p. it just depends on what you're playing

Yea if you're playing 3-string power chords for punk songs, you're never going to develop as a guitarist

Also.. anyone experimented with different speakers in a marshall 4 by 12? Know of a set that are more trebly, sharper.

This forum is frequented by the most knowledgeable Marshall fanatics you're ever likely to encounter. Be warned: they can be very abrasive to those who don't enjoy 'cork-sniffing' examination of details.

Uhm, that's over half of a guitars sound...

If your sound isn't getting enough treble even when you turn down both bass AND mids, there is obviously a malfunction somewhere in the chain. Start by checking your cables and your ears.

The tonal differences between straight and slanted cabs are not that big, and definitely wouldn't make you perceive a lack of treble the way you do.

are you running anything in your effects loop? I find that running effects in certain amps effects loop has a major impact on the high end. just a thought. Or, are you using a bunch of pedals/have a lot of cable between your guitar and amp? This can also effect the high end. more cable = less high end.

Meh. That's nobody's business but his. However, with a name like "Axl Rose" I think we can assume he also learns more difficult songs. Not that that's the point of playing guitar.

Im a slash man, can play every gnr song note for note, and a bunch of the things from his side projects!

I have gibsons n marshalls but I never get as much treble as he does live... I guess he has his tech tap dancing back stage though.

I know slash revalved his JCM800... and replaced the speakers with... umm.. greenbacks? I think! Whatever they are!

The trouble is though that it always feels like my tone is too muffled... like the presence is way down... even when its way up. I just wondered what I could do to make a sharper tone.

You know how a wah used as a filter sounds, really sharp, like that. I do use my wah as a filter for a lot of solos, I know slash does that too, but it leands itsself to a lot of feedback because I can only get 5 metres awway from my stack in my room!

That's what I hear. Ever since I've heard that I've rolled back the treble & bass with good results.

*this was my 100th post btw ; )
