Mr. Satriani
Any Joe fans? I was hoping someone could point out what exactly he does to give him his unique sound. It's like an airy 80's sound which sounds unique from blues and rock

Moved to the correct section.
I don't know exactly how to get his tone, but there's a good chance you can turn something up if you use the Search function.

Ya, Satch is cool. I think he has his own signature peavey amp and then he has his ibanez but i dont know much about his rig, you could try http://www.guitargeek.com , they have a lot of rigs, just search for his and see if they have it

Joe's rig is definately on guitargeek. However, if you watch the bonus feature of his "Live in San Francisco" DVD he goes over his setup. Joe is the virtuoso's virtuoso.

I've been back and forth on that debate, in my mind, for years. It's too damn close to call, and depending on which you ask me, you'd get a different answer.

I dont have any Satch cd's. I think I am going to go buy Surfing With The Alien as soon as I can. I really like his stuff.

Satriani is easily among the best. Also regarding Vai giving Satriani a run for his money. I'm not to say who's better as I like them both literally the same, but unless I'm misread, isn't Satriani self taught and also taught Vai to play (as well as many others)? Seems kind of hard to give your mentor a run for his money.

Have any of you seen the Satch CD's? Joe Satriani teaching Vai to play is a very overrated story. Upon hearing it, images of a doting Satriani teaching "little Stevie Vai" how to tap and sweep at the same time, are conjured in one's mind. The truth is they were kids. Satriani is 4 years older than Vai (In fact he'll be 50 next July).
Vai learnt the bulk of his playing at Berklee college of music in Boston, and playing with Frank Zappa (Which he did some arcane transcriptions for). So essentially it's fair to say that Vai "cut his teeth" with Joe (they lived on the same street). But to say that Joe taught Steve everything he knows is simply untrue.

Ok i just flippin found this post i made awhile ago, moved from the open section (sorry again). Yea I've been listening to both Vai and Satch lately and I like how all their songs are just huge guitar solos. I'm seeing a lot of parallels in their techniques though.... maybe cause the were so close to the same age and the fact that they probably spent a lot of time together.

If you buy that one, I strongly urge you to buy "Crystal Planet" as well. Surfin' is a great, fun album, but "Crystal Planet" contains quite a bit more complexity in the backings.
