Slash has a natural tone but for the most part hes using lots of volume and gain on the overdriven channel of his marshall.

In the example of sweet child o mine, the only reason the intro sounds so clean, despite being on 'dirty' settings, is after each note is picked its muted to prevent it ringing out. With only one note being amplified at once your preventing distorition and break up.

Ive seen people barre the 12 fret for the intro and it sounds awful this way as the notes turn to mush!! Before you pick each note in the sequence you must lift your finger off the previous note and let it lie against the finger which just fretted it to mute it.

If its still sounding too dirty then turn the treble/gain/presence down... but really these are important components of his tone.

Another thing you can do to help get his tone is use the neck pickup with the tone knob rolled almost all the way down (depending on the guitar of course). This will give you a nice smooth tone for playing solo's.

Oh, and don't use as much gain as you think you would need, because that will turn a good "clean" overdriven sound to mush.

On the contrary, use as much gain as possible then employ good techique to control it! Thats the key to a fat, sweet tone with lots of pop like sweet child.

1: depends on the amp

2: depends on if you're recording or playing for yourself

On any marshall youve gotta stick the gain on max, duno about other amps. If I record I set a mic up infront of my cab, I dont use the line out, so for recording I dont have to change my settigns too much.
