Another thing you can do to help get his tone is use the neck pickup with the tone knob rolled almost all the way down (depending on the guitar of course). This will give you a nice smooth tone for playing solo's.

Oh, and don't use as much gain as you think you would need, because that will turn a good "clean" overdriven sound to mush.
