Solo'ing

Hej guys,
I'm new to all this, just registered, but allready learned a lot from the site :D
I've been playing guitar for 2 years now, but I'm still quite a beginner.
I can play cords, and simple solo's (things like nirvana, and some harder stuff), and I controll all the standards like bending, hammeron/pull off etc, but in the last half year I just can't seem to improve a bit.

The question I have is: How can I learn to shred and sweep pick the quickest? :confused:

I've followed all sort of 'beginner shred lessons' and stuff like that, but they all start out either way to difficult, or go way to fast for me to follow.
On advice, I learned easier stuff (normall solo's, metal tunes etc) but these are all to easy. I just can't find the right link between these 2.
Any idea's or info that might help? :D

If something's too fast for you then just try to learn the notes first (at a slow speed). Try to learn to play it slowly, using alternate picking, and speed it up as you feel comfortable (and it remains accurate).

Any sugjestions with what song/lesson I should start?
(hardest I can play: In Flames - Man Made God (with trouble -_-))

Eh and how many hours a day is normall for guitar practice as hoby?
I have no school for half a year, so at the moment I practice 4 hours a day, but could be far more :D

Im about to start (again) wood-shedding my shredding. I usually play blues rock which (in my mind at least) is different. Im using a book called "Speed mechanics for lead guitar" and you can find it here:

I was at the same spot as you just a month ago, I just started playin lots of metallica, metallica is the cure mah man, and i've also been playin for two years :eek: ;)

There is no easy way...only one way and that way is practicing alot. Try to alternate pick first before you learn to sweep. Alternate picking is all about the picking hand while sweeping is all about the fretting hand.

I can pick up a little speed sometimes but Im not really in the same league as Schmange or theJonester !

geez! you play for 4 hours a day, and think you aren't practicing enough? wow... I play for 30 minutes a day, an hour at the most... and I've been progressing fine so far... I would say, don't practice so much that it loses it's fun, but practice enough that you still get better...

Oh, and btw, how are you liking that book dr_simon? I was thinking of getting it... is it worth it?

Well I have never done anything else than alternate picking :P

one last question though: How can you tell how many notes/sec your playing? I've seen fast discusions about it, but even with a metronome, I can't seem to find the right speed I'm at :P

Got totally demoralised today though, my uncle came by, and he like, malmsteened me ^_^

Anyways, thx for the help, started on some fast rythems, made them a bit slower (powertabs), speed is picking up.
