I've heard some very conflicting views on this subject; some people tell me I should have the pick slanted somewhat, and some people say it should be parallel with the strings. I really have no idea which way you're supposed to go. Anyone care to enlighten me?

There is no right & wrong in this , but most people pick with a angle , cuz it's easier and faster.
I like to pick parallel to the strings when I play some speed metal rhythms cuz it sounds more like successive downstrokes , but most of the time the pick is angled.

Honestly, I don't think it's that important....I've been playing for about 16 years now and I couldn't tell you which way I use a pick....I've never payed attention, I just play.

It all comes down to comfort and what works best for you. If the way your holding it now doesnt affect your playing ability then leave it as is, there is no point fixing something that isnt a problem. For example If you watch carefully you can see guitar player steve morse holding his pick differently, but the guy shreds.
