No complaints here. But let's list some reasons WHY they suck, that way we've built a solid argument. For instance, their melodies are repetitive, they abuse seven string guitars so that their rhythms are muddy and sloppy. They claim to be original even though they've stolen PLENTY of riffs. They started Nu-metal. That's all I can think of right now. I don't really enjoy listening to them, but I don't like to say people "suck" unless I list reasons.

There are a few songs by Korn I like, but overall I'm not a fan. Not trying to be a smart A$$, (that's Jolly's job), but someone must care, look at how many album's they've sold.

they have sold a ton of albums because they, along with other crap, are heaped into every musical ignorant persons wide open mouth via radio,tv and other ignorant people. They make money first...not music...

the best thing about them is that they used to be a 3rd wave ska band before they got all metal-like! not a bad one either

Haha, that was a pretty good one.
You make a good point Chucklives.....Britney does suck, but those albums are bought by pre-teens who just want to look like her. It's children's music...Your right also in that tv, especially eMpTV, pushes this crap.

Their self-titled album and Life is Peachy were freaking awesome albums. Follow the Leader was good too. But like it's been said, they kinda fell off after that.

i guess im considered a fan, even though i don't own any of their albums. i seen them live at ozzfest even though i went for ozzy. an alright show to be around. don't really care if their guitarist left since if i cared of about them, i would learn their names.
i guess im not much of a fan afterall

I was in high school when their first cd came out. To be fair, it was
very different, and no, different does not make it good. But it was a cool new sound for a while. Yes, they started Nu Metal/anti technique.
I'm with most people who like em. I like their self titled cd, the rest I can live without. BALL TOUNGE!!!!

other truly unique good bands were emerging in 94'....In Flames for example, but we have seen what the increased exposure has done to them.
Why does increased exposure cause bands to stink out instead of simply stick out?

To me they seem like a rite of passage band. Like what AC/DC and GNR was to my generation, Korn is to the new generation of kids coming up. It'll probably lead them on to better stuff. That's what happened to me at least.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

Leedog: that's pretty intresting actually... ive not really thought of it that way... It's just they really are apples and oranges to compare... but in terms of impact, I think you could be right...
I dont really know too much about korn.. so i've decided to start going through the discography (that's been on my pc for about 6months)..
I totally disagree with you... their guitar tone is great, it does also avoid really tasteless meandering solos... the early stuff reminds me primus (blind, i'll be damned if the intro to that isnt lifted straight off "too many puppies").. the drummer can certainly play...
I'm not a fan of the lyrics, but then again in comparison to gun n roses its not hurrendous...
Im pretty anti-technique my self.. It's nice to do something once in a while if it feels like it fits, but playing like your manhood's been called into question is just ridiculous... and ive said it before, Look at the song writing of the Satrianis and Vais (in particular "brother" by steve vai) and compare that to poeple who "cant play" like cat power, smog, baptist generals...
Theres a reason why these virtiousos use women and cars in their videos, covers etc, there's f ck all substance or though, it's all sequencing notes, nothing beyond that, and if you have to think about anything beyond the rythem and melody you have to pad for the dear life of you. Snatch at f cking cliches with both hands...
primus for me are the only happy story of somepoeple who can really play who have intresting songs... I swear to god Satch would write some of the worlds best selling ringtones, but he writes some of the most cringe worthy, banal, made obvious guitar solos for even the slowest witted of us to get, cack that i've heard...
it's the same with dream theater (except that mike portny is a bit of a daddy), I saw them live with a freind of mine who's a huge fan, which is surprising considering he's got an above average iq... I just had no what the appeal was... untill it dawned on me... It's all about making something hurrendously obvious and quantifiable so people will think your the best in what's really a f cking subjective field.. really alot of these guitarist play against the clock like they're running the hundered meters, and that in those ten seconds everyone will agree whos the best... it's like beingable to type at 90+ words a minute, it doesnt mean youll write a complex or compelling story, it just that you'll fill it with stuff in the time you get, and if your pretty characterless and one dimensional in your thinking, its gonna be the lowest grade diahorea with sports car, mtv gals, sun glasses, and bad attitude...
ydlkfjsdlkfjsflk malmsteen is the prime example of someone relying on the same tired arpegios, and having idiots hoot and holler along cos he can play it faster than they can.
I get so pissed off about this... is the guitar population into monster trucks, cheer leaders, getting drunk, and shooting the sh t about whos a "hot" guitar player?... theres more than your contracually obliged heroes pouring out parodies of instrumental rock.

You're saying that Crystal Planet isn't a compositionally complicated album? Or that "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" is an obvious solo? I heartily disagree. Honestly I don't see what's banal about Satriani's playing. You mention someone like Santana, and, yes, "banal" is the first word that springs to my mind. I mean, yes, if you were singling out the album "Engines of Creation" I would see where you're coming from here, but even "Surfing with the Alien" easily the simplest of his albums is at least fun and catchy. In that respect I see what you mean about the ringtones, but I see relatively little actual "boring" material in those songs. Ok, so the guy can't write lyrics to save his life, but his guitar melodies (and I guess perhaps this is just a matter of opinion) I have never found to be obvious, banal, or cringeworthy. Perhaps I'm wrong, but "Flying in a Blue Dream" seems pretty well put together to me.

I never really listened to korn, what I have heard, I haven't liked, but I'm not sure if I've even heard one of their songs all the way through. if you want to hear a good metal band with 2 awesome guitarists, listen to Lamb of God... I love them.

that's the thing, i'm not saying his whole career is a crock of shlt , but what i am saying is that it's like panning for gold, you really have to sift through gallons of muddy water before you find the odd jem... and for me those gems are all 2 to 3 second snippets smattered across his songs..
I dont really like that album, nor any other to be honest... I do like maybe 2 to 3 seconds a riff here and there, but as a whole it's hugely obvious, god forbid should not realise that the dude's probably wearing sunglasses and playing "with his heart"...
What i'm saying is that playing technically can be very intresting, take Sato from melt banana, but the way he plays is designed to churn your stomach, and it's quite subtle in that it's hard to tell when he's actually playing the guitar and when hes just using noise, and even though he's playing pretty fast, there arent actually many "solos", buts it hard to judge with him..
I'm not telling you Joe Satriani has no skill or talent... that's not what i said, its just that hes poured out alot of unnecesarry cack... Surfing with the alien is one of the worst albums i've heard (with midnight being the light relief on there).. It just sounds like those fvcking midi files that load up on some moron's hope page...
I'm sure that some of satchs stuff really does appeal to some poeple, and that's fine, but from what i gather a good proportion like it cos the guitar solos are BLINDINGLY obvious, and half the time you can whistle the up and comming melody before it hits, and predictability appeals to alot of edjits... I'm sure the * arpegial run pinch harmonic then whammy* crap makes quite a few poeple, including myself, cringe.. it just the staple of clichies that the genre is built on that makes it pretty unlistnable for me..

Gee, when has an argument, completely subjective in nature (as this one is), ever turned out well here on guitartricks?
and what is cack?
Finally, I'm not a moderator or anything, but you'd do well to check out the Guitar Tricks Rules and Regulations sticky thread. Specifically the part about trying to get around the language filter.

I'd be lying if i was to say I didn't like Korn way back when they 1st came out. Hell, I still pop in one of there cd's now and then. But does this mean they are breaking up, or just replacing him?
