I'm new to the guitar and trying to understand the effects of changing the bridge and therefore string height over the frets. I play a Yamaha accoustic.

I would think that with a lowered height, my left hand fingers would be less likely to touch the unintended strings. I'm still pretty poor at getting a consistant clear sound.

Any thoughts on this?

dont try to customize your guitar alone, and especially at a begginner stage.

string height really doesnt have much to do with you accidently pushing down other strings. Something like that will go away with practice

anyways, welcome to the world of guitar, and there are many different lessons here at guitar tricks :) :) :)

You can try lowering the bridge, just to see what it's like, but a proper setup may involve adjusting the bridge, the truss rod, and the depth of the slots in the nut. Not recommended for beginners!

A search of our archives turned up these threads.

You can try adjusting the height of the posts at the ends of the bridge, but then you may end up taking it to a tech and saying "Fix, please!".

Changing the action (height of the strings above the frets), will also affect the intonation (the accuracy of the tuning along the length of the fretboard), and the pickup height may need to be adjusted as well. And then there's the depth of the notches in the nut. That is deffinitely not something for a beginner to mess with!
