Bein A Well-Rounded player

I always read on threads when u guys debate about styles. But is it really that important to be a well rounded player...if ur love for music is based upon that one style you enjoy playin. An analogy could be that we're similar to athletes because we play our own sport now would u ask a basket ball great to run the 100 metres in less 10 secs, or the hockey player to jump in the ring with ali. Isn't it quite the same because there are so many different styles out there. I find it confusin....sure i enjoy listenin to all kinds of music but i have a focus in what i do in my playin.

i would agree with u 100%. i love metal, as well as classical music, but i can't stand blues and jazz. Jack white said he loves the blues coz it's easy- so y spend time perfecting an easy genre? i much prefer to go along with the whole ' you play what you play, and you know what feels right' saying by Lord James Hetfield!!

so wat wud u reccommend as challenging blues, coz that was really the reason y i didn't bother with blues as ppl like him were saying how easy it was.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B King, Albert King. The difficulty in blues isn't always in the technicality. Playing like those guys takes a lot of feel.

And challenging jazz is, well, ANY jazz, hahaha, both technically AND in feel.

Blues isnt easy IMHO,try getting any stevie ray vaughn solo with the same feel and emotion is hard to do. i been playing a long time and i still cant master a SRV solo exacty how he does it. some simple sounding music can be the most difficult to master..

I would say to you all, that if your just doin it for fun, play what you like - regardless of difficulty or musicality. However, if you want to be one of the greats, you may find it useful to play all styles. And, if you want to make a few bucks playing guitar, you may find that learning some jazz will get you a couple hundred dollars at some gig.

...just a couple things to think about.

if i may intervene. blues may not be a show-off genre. so you never get to see them actually shred. but you have to have more technical "know how." there is a lot of music theory involved with blues. and since most solos are improved, you gotta KNOW what you are playing and why that is. or else, you'll end up butchering a song because of wrong notes.
