They are nice machines however when I was in the market I ended up getting a Korg D1600 mkII.
8 simultaneous inputs at 16 bit non compressed audio. It will cost you about a grand.
The korg recorders also come with the added advantage of having http://www.korgstudios.com/forum/ as s support forum. I have just been made a mod there and they are a really nice and knowledgeable bunch.
If you want something a little flashier their are also the XD series by Korg (16 and 32 track models)

so You like the korg units?
I've heard from other reviews that the roland is the top notch company digital recorders, and other company sorta feed off of there features. Is that pretty much how you think it is?

I think anyone who is seriously into recording will use a computer as they are much more powerful and flexible.
However if you are new to recording, need portability and are happy with the functions that you get for your dollar Id go with a D1600.
The D1600 is supposed to sound better than the Rollands as they don't use lossy compression to write to the disk. Wether this is true or not remains to be seen.
When I was starting out I went with the D1600 and it was great. If you are serious about getting an all in one DAW visit:
www.korgstudios.com
or
www.vsplanet.com

I just spent a lot of time looking at both units the rolands vs2000 and 2400 and the korg d1600mkii both are great but.. the big drawback to the roland is the fan is a bit loud. i heard you may need to record vocals in another room.

The D1600 mk ii's fan shuts off during recording.
However, most computer / digital things make some fan noise and with a bit of judicious mic positioning it is usually possible to minimize it with out moving into another room. Though this dose depend on how loud your vocals are !!
