These issues have been discussed very thoroughly for months by the instructors and moderators. We had a lot of conflicting goals to reconcile, and there were strong cases to be made on all sides of any particular issue. It came down something like this:

 • We can't win, either they hate the popups, or they hate the fees. The site has to support itself somehow, and ISP's don't just give their services away.

 • Every attempt to control the number of file downloads has been circumvented by the users (multiple accounts, clearing cookies, etc) This has created a huge increase in bandwidth requirements, and that costs a lot of money.

 • The instructors are all on board with the changes. The moderators, too. We all had ideas to create a better site, and there was a lot of work involved in making it happen.

 • The instructors want to post larger file sizes, and videos, which we could never do without subscription fees. The bandwidth requirements for MP3's is already large. We're adding videos to a lot of the tutorials, and while that makes them better, it also adds a lot more to the bandwidth needs.

 • The changes conform to our clearly stated legal policy, and is not a copyright violation. This was asked, considered, and answered last year, while the changes were being worked out.

 • Anyone who wants to stop showing his files on this site, can remove them thru the "edit trick" interface. The files were volountarily uploaded, and they can be removed by the people who posted them. No problem.

I can understand that some people have limited resources. I ask you to consider that that limitation also applies to the running of this site.
