it freaked me out cause I was on this board when they updated it so one second it was normal and than I clicked to open a post and when the post loaded it was all different, it freaked me out until I realized what was going on. lol. I think the front page has a way better lay out and I like the color scheme.

Ya, what's the deal Jon? That's kinda lame. $5 for audio clips now? sheesh. I could understand for new users just joining...but not ppl who've been here a while.
# 6
yeah, I have a feeling that's going to turn some people away. Just doesn't seem right to charge $5 to listen to the mp3's unless every single person who's posted an mp3 gets a cut of it. It kindof seems like someone wants to get paid for someone elses hard work and that person not get anything. Wait a min. that sounds like real life.....man, just when I get comfortable in a fantasy world it goes all reality on me
I understand it takes a lot to keep the site up and running, and if that's what it takes, then so be it. But, if not, then this $5 thing seriously needs to be re-thoughtout.

I don't see the reference to the $5 a month charge... can someone provide a link?
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Here
Look at the box below the tab. That's where it describes the mp3 file and tell's you how to listen to it.

Mp3 access and no ads is the basis of the high bandwidth service. There are a few bonus features (forum avatar and such). Also, the file size has been raised to 2MB (from 500kb) and we now support video lessons, which we didn't before.
Check out this page for all the details:

I know, to be honest, I think Jon's got some explaining to do. This thing is really buggin' me. And there's plenty of other guitar sites with similar features that don't require membership fees. Not everything has to be a capital enterprise.

Very true, Meta. You may just have caught Jon on a technicality. In fact, unless there's a disclaimer stating that one agrees to allow their personal mp3/lessons to be used free of charge, then you're not allowed to use one's work without express written or implied permission (it's called intellectual property). And even if that disclaimer is made from here on in, it has no retroactive effect, meaning he should either dump the entirety of the lessons/mp3s hosted since that time or individually ask for permission from each contributor.

These issues have been discussed very thoroughly for months by the instructors and moderators. We had a lot of conflicting goals to reconcile, and there were strong cases to be made on all sides of any particular issue. It came down something like this:
I can understand that some people have limited resources. I ask you to consider that that limitation also applies to the running of this site.
- We can't win, either they hate the popups, or they hate the fees. The site has to support itself somehow, and ISP's don't just give their services away.
- Every attempt to control the number of file downloads has been circumvented by the users (multiple accounts, clearing cookies, etc) This has created a huge increase in bandwidth requirements, and that costs a lot of money.
- The instructors are all on board with the changes. The moderators, too. We all had ideas to create a better site, and there was a lot of work involved in making it happen.
- The instructors want to post larger file sizes, and videos, which we could never do without subscription fees. The bandwidth requirements for MP3's is already large. We're adding videos to a lot of the tutorials, and while that makes them better, it also adds a lot more to the bandwidth needs.
- The changes conform to our clearly stated legal policy, and is not a copyright violation. This was asked, considered, and answered last year, while the changes were being worked out.
- Anyone who wants to stop showing his files on this site, can remove them thru the "edit trick" interface. The files were volountarily uploaded, and they can be removed by the people who posted them. No problem.
