Is there any one style of music I could learn that would give me a good base for playing other styles, or would I just have to learn a bunch of different styles?

My advice is to learn the basics, and then see how those particular elements fits in with a certain style. You'll definately want to learn many different styles of music to be a well rounded musician. Also this will allow you to incorporate a few genres together to make your own unique blend.

I suggest learning your pentatonic scales in all positions all over the fretboard. These (IMHO) are the most versatile scales which will let you play anything from blues to rock to funk, even some country (Maj Pents). Hope that helped.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

I suggest learn Hendrix. If you can master his bends, vibrato, and blues/rock riffs then most others will come naturally. Then for extra credit go onto SRV :)

Learn what you listen to. The people who play the style of music that they listen to will always be better at it then if they didnt listen to it. Learn whatever you like.

I have never had a lesson in my life, and i would like to think of myself as a damn good guitarist. I taught myself but i took music theory at school so i got a good understanding of how the music system works. My advice, learn your scales and learn as many chords as you can, and make sure you know what note each fret is. But don't make the mistake of thinking that chords is all there is to it. You said your musical tastes have change since you started playing the guitar...probably a good thing, it shows your actually listening to the way people play guitar and you can define talent from trash. Good luck with it

Just learn your favorite tunes dude!I did and then they were not my favorite anymore(it may happen).Your perception of what 'good' is may change.

Songs that used to 'stir me up inside' no longer had any real value and seemed 'elementary' or childish...

Anyway, play any style that challenges you,but only if you want to advance as a guitarist.

I don't think I need lessons so much as I need just someone to point me in the right direction. Once I know what exactly I need to learn, I am able to pick it up pretty easily. I have some musical background in trumpet; I can read music pretty well, and I know my scales.

Perfect! Learn what you used to play on trumpet. Depending on how good you were, it might give you a very distinct sound. Learn all the styles of music you enjoy listening once you start understanding them.

I'd suggest jazz. Being a jazz guitarist can be quite a lonely buisiness, so the more young talent the better!!!! Also, jazz teaches you the skills and techniques to play what you want, how you want and in whatever or whomever's style you want to play it in. It's not a style - it's a freedom.
Just play man !!

You need a solid understanding of the basics of guitar (barre chords, decent picking ability, etc) to play jazz well. I highly recommend it as well, but it might not hurt to cover a couple Bush songs first or something.

Pop is the easiest style to learn because it's all four chords or fewer, no solo. Well, Fefe Dobson did a song a year or so back that actually had a decent chord riff. I think it was called "Take me away."

Blues is good to play with for practicing soloing and getting a good musical feel. It's a very underappreciated style. You would do well to at least mess around with it for a while.

basically if u learn power chords you can play just about any modern rock song

actually with powerchords you can play like everything lol

yeah sence ive started geetar i went from some modern rock punk to a acdc/ledzeppelin/hendrix/all those other classic rockers freak.

Sorry man, SRV is beyond hendrix. Hendrix is far behind, as u can tell that SRV music is much tougher to play. It called evolution. But i cant argue that hendrix was the first.

my 2 cents.

Specialization is much more time/effort efficient (which is important if you do gigs for $$), but it's the versatility that makes the guitar such a fun instrument.

If you like it, play it.
