Sorry. The song I forgot to mention is "The Mystical Potato-head Groove thing" or "Surfing with the Alien" I think both are compositionally superior to Hammet.

Sorry I didn't get into more detail.
Here are just a few better than Hammett:
Please listen to the playing from:
the dude.....................tune...................................CD
John Norum.......... Heart of Stone...........The Final Countdown
John Norum.............Opium Trail......................Distant Voices
Zakk Wylde.............1,000,000 miles..........Book of shadows
Randy Rhodes...................Mr Crowley.............Blizzard
Paul Gilbert..........To be with you....slow melodic non-shreding - Paul on ice
George Lynch...The Hunter............under lock and key (dokken)
George Lynch.....when heaven comes down.......beast from the east
Marty Friedman & Dave Mustaine ...Hanger 18.... Rust in piece
Marty Friedman & Dave Mustaine ...Lucretia.....Rust in piece
Ty Tabor.....................Pretend..............Dogman (king's x)
Ty Tabor.....................higher than God......Tape Head
John Sykes................This is the One....thunder and lightning (thin lizzy)
John Sykes...............Ptolemy................blue murder
there are many others way better than Kirk,
like Joe on ice nine or satch boogie,
or in his sleep....
but my fingers are tired.
You get the idea.
Sure Kirk has a few great tunes and solos...
but for a major band that's toured for 20 years...
He should be fifty times better, like Randy was.
Happy New Year

Zakk Wylde? Talk about repetitive pentatonic licks! I tihnk any Metallica from the 80's is way better than any BLS stuff. They wrote much better songs. Just my 2 cents

Satch- crushing day
gibert- scarified,
malmsteen- blue
as much as i like Kirk Hammett and will admit to him being my initial influence as a guitarist, his solos don't come near some of Dave Mustaines solos, and his the ryhthm guitarist of the band!!
Hammett is good, but compared to other metal bands lead guitarists, he falls quite short of the mark. e.g. Dave Murray, Randy Rhoades, Marty Friedman (wen he was still part of megadeth) all out perform Hammett.
'one' a cool tapping lick? Indeed. But 'midnight' a cool satch tapping tune.
there's the difference in technique and quality.

Yes Zakk uses the pentatonic scale, what great player doesn't?
In fact he twists it inside out.
He also has amazing chicken picking, bending and vibrato.
My song offering was from his solo CD.
BLS is not my favorite work from him.
Ever hear of Ozzy?
The fact remains..
Please try this excercise - not for children.
play some Hammett, note for note, his best solos.
Then play some of Zakk's solos....
then dip your hand into a bucket of ice water,
to put the fire out on your fingers
Have you ever seen him in person?
Zakk was better than Hammett fifteen years ago,
before Ozzy and Sharon ever heard of him
when Hammett was already published
Any questions?
Figure out Peacemaker Die, play it as Nuno does...
then get back to us about how wonderful Kirk is
thank you and happy new year

Why is it that everyone gets so caught up in who can play what the fastest? Theres a difference between what u CAN play and what u DO play. Some folks just get waay too heated up when someone's got a different opinion about a guitarist. Take a bong hit and relaaax

Hi,
I agree with you.
If you will reread my list, you will see that none are simple speedsters.
It's all about taste, and phrasing.
How could I leave Nuno off the first list I don't know.
Please listen to Extreme's III Sides to every story
and Waiting for the punchline for excellent phrasing and really well written tunes.

theres a key word there, best, meaning not the fastest. best includes writing, song flow, accuracy, tricks and wicked sounds. My opinion joe satriani is among this, hes written some really amazing songs and that are not just about speed but also have a lot of amazing little things. When he plays "satch boogie" live, the ending he throws in is insane, i'd describe it but kinda hard too.
though ofcourse we would not have our great guitarists today without jimi hendrix, he definatly was the greatest in the past and has lead to even better guitarists.
My teacher told me he read up a test was done on speed, John Petrucci of Dream theater topped it at 21 notes/second. Steve Vai at 19.

i have to disagree with the last comment on speed, as total guitar did an issue om the art of shredding , n it says in there that vai broke the speed barrier with his 21 notes/second playing, n claimed he was the fastest. but wthout a doubt, there 2 phenominally good guitarists

Before I state my opinion, I must say there are a couple things wrong with this thread.
First, Joe Satriani didn't teach Vai how to play guitar, he only introduced him to it. They lived by each other when they were growing up.
Second, although I dislike kRiK OmELeT, you gotta give the guy some credit for being a part of a great band and influencing a lot of people's guitar playing.
And my choices are,
Technical ability alone: Shawn Lane (RIP) without a doubt, if you've never heard him, grab his CDs and be prepared to drop your jaw, simply astonishing.
Songwriting, Phrasing, and Replay Value: Steve Vai
Overall: Steve Vai - Awesome technical ability, awesome songwriter and about the only solo guitarist that I can listen to a whole album of without getting bored.
As for the guy who wanted some examples:
Shawn Lane - Not Again
Steve Vai - Tender Surrender, Boston Rain Melody, For the love of God, Giant Balls of Gold, Bad Horsie, Erotic Nightmares, Blue Powder, Jibboom....to name a few.

but then again not everyone likes/listens to classical guitar
yep i totally agree

I think his name is Marcus Paus. Some ungodly number like 48 notes per second.

are you sure thats true, iv heard of Marcus before, but i cant find him online
but if it is true, he hold the record for fastest alternate picking or tremelo picking
NOT sweeping...a common misconception

Best Guitar player I reckon is Brian Setzer. Especially in his "Brian Setzer Orcherstra" He plays through loads of styles like Jazz, Rock, Blues ect and makes them sound easy. He also is a great showman!
