Fender '65 super reverb, fender '65 vibroking, Marshall 800 jcm. They all have reissues out, but i find that with a little paitence it can be way easier cheaper to get the originals, but theres risk involved.

Don't do that - they have trouble enough walking upright.

I think you should look into either a...

Fender Blues hot rod Devile

or check out the new A class

Crate amps

in that range. These amps will be the new classics so you had better pick one up now. There's no "modeling" so your amp will never grow old. You can supe up the hot rods and the crate amps are class A clean.

A spider 2 is pretty good for what it is designed for. It designed to be VERY versitile. It got a some good tricks in its bag, but none are great. It gots the pros and cons of a solid state amp and its faithful to its emulations. Something to consider when u play a wide style of music on a budget but i would never go solid state again...well maybe if i was fed up with the upkeep invovled with tubes but that may not happen :) . Its a good product you wont waste your money.

I always see people saying that their tube amps cost a lot to keep "running" good. I have never put a penny into mine and I've had it for 4 years and have been gigging with it for 2.

Especially if you try it for a while and then sell it to some other poor, dumb, bastard who thinks that 'modeling' will give them access to all of the great guitar tones in the world.

>major rant<
Try out as much gear as you can get your hands on, but don't ever expect that any one thing will do it all. If there's a particular sound you're after, you may well need to acquire a rig that is chosen for just that kind of sound. And that will not cover all of the other stuff too.

Tone is an organic synergy of component parts that may not work cohesively to any other purpose. If you want to do the 'cover band' thing, then one of the new solid state modeling amps will solve a lot of your problems in terms of emulating (that's computerspeak for ripping off) another band's sound. But if you ever expect to arrive at a definitive sound that you can claim as your own, you won't find it here. Not unless you want to be known for a sterile, processed, anyone-can-duplicate-it kind of quasi-tone.

Please forgive the rant. I have not always succeeded in my search for good tone, but I have always tried. I get upset at the suggestion that such a quest is somehow not worthwhile, or even unecessary. One thing that makes our chosen instrument worthy above all others is that it is both very accessable to a beginner, and so very intimately expressive in the hands of a skilled artisan.
>/rant<

Those who would cheapen our craft in order to allow the lowest common denominator to impress the ignorant masses, earn my deepest contempt.

And I count modeling amplifiers as among the worst offenders in this regard.

I'll asume 600 pounds is around 1000 dollars U.S...I'm to lazy to look.

Here are some 'tubular' choices dude.

Peavey 5150 head/combo(or 5150 II)
Peavey XXX head/combo
Marshall DSL head
Marshall TSL60 head
B-52 ST-100A

n' stuff.

All thougth lordofthestrings has my deepest respect, and is by far one the most knowledge man i know when it comes to guitars and equipment (and hes canadian), also im a 100% tube man myself, there are times when S.S. will do the job. Try before you buy and dont be close minded, however i still beleive as stated before tube is the best. My friend once recommend that i get Slient solid state!

I often jam with some friends using my pair of old Ampeg G-18 transistor amps, because they sound great, and nobody goes home half-deaf. These amps are great for recording, too. What makes my blood boil is the rash of 'all-in-one' computerised, homogenised modeling amps that foist pseudo-tone on people who should know better.

Ha ha! Is that like "Please play Far, Far, Away" ?

P.S. Thanks for the props! :)

I can see Lordathestrings suicide bombing the line6 factory now...

What I dont get is the insane price for the vetta 2 head/combo?Its a modeling amp for cryin' out loud!

Other than boutique amps(Diezel, some Soldano's,VHT's,Framus e.c.t)you can get just about any tube amp around the 1700$ mark. Please elaborate sombody on WHY the line6 vetta 2 is so much.It boggles my mind!
