Old Marshall 50W stacks , and DOD overdrive pedal.
I donno why does so many people dig that kinda tone ... There are tons of guitarists with much better tone than malmsteen's ... It's a matter of personal taste anyway.
A helpfull tip to sound like yngwie is to use the neck pickup a lot , for most of his fast runs and arpeggios (that's like 90% of what he does :p ) .

I don't like that tone either. Like fingernails on a chalkboard to me, to Shrilly.....
Anyway, Yngwie's guitar's have a brass nut and a scalloped neck, which probably plays a big part in his sound. I know the brass nut will make things brighter, which his tone is very bright.....

That's the first time I hear someone says that , let's form an "Yngwie Tone Haters Club" then. :D

yngwie is insane. he gets a lot of his tone from his scalloped necks, they give you a better grip on the string, but make it more difficult to play fast, also have REALLY nice equipment will make anyone sound better.

I know DOD makes an yngwie malmsteen signature pedal, which pretty much sounds like his more distorted tones, but most of his tone comes from his fingertips and his scalloped neck. If you really want to sound like him, they have a Fender signature strat.

The funny thing , his live rig costs like a million bucks !
I've read that he uses 28 amps , his wierd looking custom pedal board , and other stuff to get his tone... Actually , if you saw his video in G-3 , just before his show , he played in a room through a small practice amp (I think it was a Marshall AVT-20) and he sounded exactly like he always does .

Lets make it easy:
DiMarzio YJM pickups with a maple finerboard Stratocaster.
Thats basically the sound of him. As long as the distortion is on high with medium delay and slight reverb, you'll be set.
O yea, dont forget to play on the neck pickup.
Thats an easy way to get his sound. Not the most accurate, but the easierst.

You are all wrong. The first thing you must do is grow some really bad hair. Step two-get a strat. Step three- eat a whole butt load of swedish meat balls, and stuff some in your already too tight leather pants. That my friends is the true malmsteen tone method :p

Step four (or a hint) : Don't get your a$$ fat , and if you have a fat a$$ , try to lose it ... Malmsteen sounded way better when he was skinny .
Money spoils !

Good for him! That's not easy to do.
OTOH the video I linked to earlier showed him utterly failing at blues back when he was skinny.
>sigh< Nobody can play every style well.

I was reading through one of my friends old guitar mags.It featured Yngwie and he said in the studio he used Two amps. One with the treble and mids cranked and no lows and the other set the opposite(sounds like a live nightmare to me)but with the mix he gets his tone.

It was a clip from his first instructional video , when he said that he has full command of the blues !
Malmsteen never sounded good trying the blues , it's not his thing ... I never liked his tone , but his earlier albums & live shows were very cool & soulfull compared to his more recent stuff (even if we compare old songs and the way he performs them now) , although he never changed his tone or style .

Jeez...how heavy was he before I saw him a couple of months ago? He still looks - fat.....
Blues at lightspeed - never a good combination. Thank God he only spends 3 minutes there.........
I really don't care for him using a pick on a classical guitar either. Only 2 minutes there........
Split coil humbi's or use a single coil axe with a gain cranked preamp and plenty of reverb. Toss in some slap-back delay. YM uses a midi rig a guy backstage runs.
He switches between the bridge and neck pickups frequently. Learning his technique will get you closer to his "tone" than turning a bunch of knobs.
I use an old Magnavox keyboard that has a bunch of bass pedals to get that backing sound YM gets from his stand-alone bass pedal board (I forget who makes it). Fun stuff.

I once thought a "Sweeping Arpeggio" was an Italian janitor.
