I was considering naming him for the "Originality" category, along with about ten other players, but I had to narrow it down to three. While I'm at it, an honourable mention for Robert Fripp as well, musical genius (but I bet Jolly would beg to differ ;) ).

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

O. K. this will probably sound weird, cause I see noone mentioned the guy yet, so you probably don"t consider him a good guitarist, but...
Steve Stevens, Billy Idol. I like him a lot. He may not fit into the originality category, but hearing his live performance, he is definitly at home in craziness
category... at least to me.
as for else:
Feeling-Slash
Speed-Yngwie
Songwriting-Izzy, Hatfield
Originality-? Hard to judge. Van Halen??
Heavyness-Iommi, Murray
Slide-Chris Rea, Cooder, Stevie Ray
Blues-Stevie Ray, Clapton.

In my humble opinion:

Feeling: David Gilmour / Vinnie Moore
Speed: BucketHead
Technicality/Craziness: Steve Vai
Songwriting: Jimi Hendrix
Originality: Tom Morello / Ron Thal
Heavyness: Daron Malakian
Slide: Derek Trucks
Blues: Johnny A
Overall 'Best' Guitarist: Joe Satriani

Double winners awarded where I just couldn't decide... :o

Buckethead, yeah he kicks ass allright - probably worth a mention in the original section (eg Cuckoo Clocks From Hell). Would have thought more people would be mentioning Rusty Cooley or Michael Angelo in the speed section though. Surprised that Yngwie is ranking so high in that area...

fair point. I think alot of people look down on Rusty Cooley 'cos he sweeps it all, so it's not 'real' speed. And Michael Angelo just looks ridiculous, so maybe people don't take him seriously... the dude looks like he walks around with a sleeping cat balanced on his head.... :D As far as I know he's kinda like a circus freak now anyway - gets wheeled out by Dean at the shows and that's it...

Yngwie ruined G3 in Denver - I wouldn't vote for him in any catagory except 'guitarist most likely to steal your doughnuts and throw a showbiz tantrum when you accuse him of it'....

I've only recently got into BucketHead, and he would probably stand up in all the catagories aside from slide/blues. Some of his stuff is amazing, and 'Enter the Chicken' is a contender for best album title in my opinion....

  • Speed: Rusty

  • Technicality/Craziness: Vai/Buckethead

  • Songwriting: Jimi

  • Heavyness: Korn (Yeah, I know :p )

  • Slide: Ry Cooder

  • Blues: Robben Ford

Lol! Since I'm not Robben Ford, I'm not creeped out. ;)

But, yeah, he's a great blues player, especially if you're used to hearing people play right out of the blues scale and nothing else. Robben's the guy who really switched me on to playing "outside" stuff.

You know he has some instructional DVDs and books out? I have The Blues and Beyond both on DVD and book. It really helped me shape my own lead style.
