I'm no expert on the specific sonic differences between the two, but in simple terms, single coils are "twangier" sounding and have less output than humbuckers. Humbuckers are typically fuller sounding and higher output. Humbuckers are most common for rock and metal. I prefer humbuckers in my guitars cuz i play mostly metal and hard rock. But there are no limitations...some of the best blues players use humbuckers and some of the best metal players use single coils. Please would somebody more articulate than me explain this better...

Do a seach on here for the differences between them. You should find all the info you need pretty quickly.

I prefer HSH or SSH. If I had to pick one it would be a bucker with a coil tap.

It's all personal preference in what sounds good to your ear.

Single coils are brighter, twangier, have less output, and are noisy (a lot of hum when not playing).

Humbuckers are fatter, offer more sustain, more output, and quiter (that's how they got the name humbucker, they buck the hum). They discovered that by putting 2 single coils next to each other, they cancel out that annoying hum that comes from single coils.

i prefer the humbuckers but now im using some of the bc rich humbuckers and they look like single coils but i like the "chunky" sound i get from them to play metal.
