New guy here

Hey everyone. Glad I came across this place. Seems to be pretty cool. I've only been playing about 6 months. Any pointers I should now about, hints, etc...I like playing rock, hard rock, and some blues. I think I'm ready to try to learn an entire song. Any good suggetions?? I thought about Jessies Girl, Back in Black. I'm interested to hear what you all have to say.

What kind of ax and amp are you using?

I've got a mex strat and a Ibanez 15 amp SoundBlaster...

I'm new to guitar myself, only been playing for about a year. I originally played acoustic for the first 3 months or so then I went to a Squire Strat, but I got rid of it and went with this brand called Metal Driver/MD, it may just be a Japanese brand exlusive, not too sure. I think it actually sounds better than strats, but I'm no expert on that. I used to have a Fender Frontman 15 as a practice amp for my first year. Then I upgraded to the new Marshall Valvestate 2000 series. Its a hybrid amp, that uses a tube for the pre-amp. I highly recommend it.

Its important to understand the very essence of creativity, and we all have our own different ways of taking ourselves that high point of self discovery. Ive always felt that playing the guitar (with its endless possibilities), it helps us bring our personality to its level of completeness. The rules are important to learn, learn theory for all its worth, but try not to get too attached to it, once you have a firm grasp on which direction you wan't to go in musically, feel free to brake a few rules in whatever matter suits you.

And let your ears guide you, :).

been fooling around off and on for years. decided once and for all its the right time to put it all together. career paths always seem to take priority. not anymore. looking to buy a gibson j-180ec soon. step up from what i am presently using. best one owned "63 lp goldtop" (original, non-reissue) until borrowed "permanantly" from a former guitar jamming "buddy"(and i use that term very loosely). scales leading the way presently, along with theory tripping close behind. fingers feel great and hard again.

if you're looking for an entire song to learn. try wild thing. you may think it is boring but listen to Hendrix's version. and always remember ROCK ON!

When starting out with the guitar its very importamnt to do whatever it takes to maintain your enthusiasm, because once we start we all have intentions of sticking with it, especially we lwarn those first few power chords. But sooner or later we always reach our rough spot, and what it all comes down to is whether or not we have enough persistence to carve around it. Playing guitar, its a wonderful experience, but from the very beginning, you can't be afraid to try new and unique styles. Although certain styles like jazz and blues never really excited us coming out of our stereo, its a whole new ball game when we experiment with these sound on our fretboard.

Thanks again for all the replies. I think my first song is gonna be outside by Stainds Arron Lewis. I love that damn song. It doesnt seem to be too difficult technique wise ( only a handful of chords ) but the rythym is giving me hell. But I shall overcome. May even sing it too. :)

I love that song by Staind. I've heard it on the radio a bunch of times, but I never knew who it was by until a friend told me. It's nothing hard, but the vibe is really cool. It has that 'get outta my face before I beat you down' mood to it.

Yeah I have the tab. Got it from Guitar tab universe. Seems to be accurate. I saw the video probably 72 times the last two days on MTV and it appears to be correct.

Hey! Looks like we have the same name (almost). I too have a mex strat, with a marshall vs30r amp. I learned classical style for about four years, then started rock playing about a year ago.

Whatever music u like will have an effect on what tunes you play, and (possibly) write.

Thanks for the welcome. No, i'm not in a band. Kinda working on something with one of my buddies that just started playing but we're really just sitting around goofing off now. I know lots of pieces to songs and he doesn't know squat but it makes me feel like i'm getting better because i'm paying more attention to what I do so I wont screw him up. I like music. The only type I'm not interetsted in playing is country. I'm not big into classical or jazz but it's totally differnt feeling when you're playing it than listening to it thru the radio or whatever. I"m big into rock and blues right now I guess. My favs right now are lifehouse, nine days, bizkit, staind, lit, shannon curfman, matchbox 20, etc....Working on the outside and absolutley ( story of a girl ( nine days ) ) right now for my first complete songs.

You should try some chilis. some of the songs are fairly easy and fun to play. and the solos are possible...
