I've done a bit of swing in my time but not any rockabilly.

Wow, I've never heard a word about rockabilly since I signed up!
I can't say I'm a fan, but then again, who can say no to the Boppers?

I like Brian Setzer a lot. One time I took one of his grooves and laid down this sax solo I heard by this guy for the Gershwin swing tune 'S wonderful. I have to say.... it had cat class and it had cat style (hahahahaha.......)

How'd the genre get its name? Is it like a cross between rock and hillbilly music?

my best guess.

Rockabilly was where rock was born man. It took country (or hillbilly if you prefer) and comebined it with blues boogie patterns, cranked it up to 200-250 BPM and took off! Rockabilly was the style of the music oif Elvis (or Scotty Moore, his guitarist) and of course, he's one of the prime originators. A lot of rockabilly wasn't so much the playing as the attitude. It was the first form of rebellion for the new generation of kids.

Whereas the older generation preferred jazz and blues over their parents church music, the new one preferred rock 'n' roll to their parents jazz and blues!

200-250bpm, for real? That sounds like coke-induced disco tempos, or perhaps that crappy techno music my old roommate would incessantly play.

My last roommate played nothing but pop-punk. I would rather have had your old roommate.

Buddy Holly, anyone? :)

The music he'd play wasn't always horrible. He just had this problem with volume... everything was at a near eardrum splitting level.

Ok Maybe I should rephrase. The "feel" was 200-250 but the notes were nothing faster than eighth notes or eighth note triplets. So you had a backbeat that seemed relatively fast, but compared to shredders, rockabilly wasn't that fast.

Since skynyrd is southern rock, it's definitely got country elements in there. And since very many country techniques, riffs, licks and backbeats were also used by rockabilly folk, I wouldn't be surprised if you see lots of rockabilly licks in their songs. I don't really play much skynyrd so.....

hehe..it's not good for gutar players to play rockabilly to much,
because it's only about 3 chords, så you can't get furtherwhit your tecnics !

But hey, Man it's Rockin'

I am a hardcore metal head shredder but my uncle turned me on to Brian Setzer earlier this summer in the car before a van halen concert and i gotta say that brian setzer kicks ass. I borrowed the CD from my uncle and bought a brian setzer guitar book and his stuff is incredibly hard to play. his solos and riffs are lightining fast and his chord voicings are tough to switch to if your not an experienced jazz musician. I recommend buying any Brian setzer or Stray Cats Cd. Check em out they kick ass!!!

I think I might give Setzer's stuff a listening to. I just got bad memories of the last swing dancing revival of the mid 90's when I was in high school. *shudders*

This is a rockabilly band from nc I've seen. They are pretty damn good too. Their lyrics are funny as hell and check out their sideburns.
