Hi, I'm new!/one question

Hello everyone, long time listener first time caller here. I started out with an acoustic about ten years ago and have been playing eletric for about three yrs now. Play mostly classic rock stuff eg. zeppelin, gnr, ac/dc etc and a bit of the Darkness stuff.

One question I have is, guess it's more of a logistics problem, how do you guys manage changing the effect settings on your pedals from song to song while gigging? I've been using Boss GT3 from the beginning and now am making a transition to the actual stompboxes, and I gotta tell you it's a royal pain having to change the settings on my delay (DD3) and other pedals everytime I finish a song (as opposed to just stepping on the preset pedals on the GT3).

Maybe arranging the set list so that the songs w/ similar effect settings go back to back???

Or you could try just using less effects. :p But seriously, I use a BOSS Digital Delay too and I rarely change the settings during gigs (unless I need a specific ping-pong type of rythmic delay). I honestly think it's much more efficient to keep your stage rig as simple as possible, to avoid potential disasters. This means keeping your effects minimal. I only use a Crybaby and an Ernie Ball Volume Pedal between my guitar and the amp (and run the digital delay through the effects loop). That advice probably doesn't help you too much, but I find using less effects pedals makes life easier.

I have both Boss singles and a Digitech multi (GNX2).

I like the singles as you don't have to go rooting round to tweak this and modulate that, you just have to know which button to move on which effect.

I use the singles to discover new sounds which I then program into the multi as a patch. This saves me having to A) remember everything B) change all the settings in a hurry in the dark.

Yeah, the thing is my effect loop IS pretty simple (strat->TS9->DS2->DD3->Twin reverb), it's just that I'm very inexperienced with scooping down and fidging those dials between the songs.

I play in my church band and since our audience range from the teens to mid 30's we try to cram in as many different genres of music as possible in that 40 minute session. We'd be playing some blusy gospel and go right into alternative/techno chant. Imagine all the changes I'd have to do on my pedal to go from reverby delay to 800ms HOLD delay during the 0.02 second transition :eek: !!!

That's funny Dr. Simon cuz my way is exactly the opposite of yours. Because I'm so used to the GT3, I find the presets that I really like from the multi and then try to emulate them with my singles (and then draw the dial settings on a paper and tape it on the side of my amp :D )

It's a pain, but I always figure out what our set list is gonna be, then format my presets in a linear order so I just have to keep incrementing my RP300 rather than go fishing through about 80 presets for the one I want.

And that is easier than pressing one button to advance one patch !!!

Thanks guys for your comments and welcome. I think I'm going to take finger_cruncher's advice and try to simplify my rigs. Just the other day I was reading the article titled 'How to play live better' (in the Guitarist or one of them UK magazines) and the first tip was to simplify your effects loop to prevent any potential onstage disasters.

One of the reasons I've been using alot of effects was to cover my ass in case I hit wrong notes (they tend to sound 'artistically intentional'). But I guess I'll just have to sit down and work on my chops and skills to improve my playing.
