what are your opinions on the POD XT? I'm thinking of grabbing one

I'd be using it for black metal/prog metal/neo-classical shred stuff

Check out the Soldano settings and try before you buy !

I have an old PodPro that I use for recording and love it however I dont want "extreme" settings ! You might wnat to check out the Boss OD20. That is capable of all sorts of tomfoolery !
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

I've got a Pod Pro also, and honestly I'm not very impressed with it. It can be good for recording, but definately sucks for playing live. It just does not have the tube warmth I love. Some of the effects have that digital kind of sound to them also. I've actually just decided to sell mine. Hopefully the improved the Pod Pro Xt.

the stock PODxt isnt' that great for a very hard and heavy sound, but they have some add-ons you can buy for it. 18 more high-gain models and 18-classic models. the add-ons are $50 more each though. I got rid of my xt a while back because i just couldn't get the sounds I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, it had some great tones hidden in it, just not quite what I was looking for. The new amp models and the new post eq they added might be worth it though.
