I have a Floyd Rose tremolo on my B.C. Rich NJ Series Virgin. I have always played with .09mm strings, a few weeks ago I foolishly put .10mm strings on it. Now I cannot keep it in tune.

I can get the bridge even with the body while the strings are in tune. After I put the locking nuts on, the fine tuners cause the bridge to move slightly and that causes the other strings to go out of tune.
I thought about buying some .09's and try putting them back on it, but I don't know if that would matter.

What am I doing wrong? I'm so frustrated with this. I need the guitar for gigs and recording but I can't use it. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not sure I'm getting a clear picture of what is happening, but let me ask a few questions, have you adjusted your spring tension since you changed strings and are you using some kind of a wedge or block to lock the tailpiece in place when you change strings/tune-up?

I don't understand what's the problem with your fine tuners , but a common trouble that happens to people when they put heavier strings on their Floyd Rose axe for their first time is the bridge getting out of it's cavity , making an angle with the guitar's body instead of being parallel with it.

If that's it , click here .

Yes. I've tried tightening the springs.

I have been able to get bridge in the correct place while the strings are in tune. After the locking nuts go on, moving the fine tuners causes the bridge to move up and down slightly.

No, I haven't used a block to lock the tailpiece in place while tuning. I guess I can give it a try, but I don't see how that's going to help since I've been able to get the bridge level.

Thank you for your responses and I welcome more.

First of all, I'm not saying that using a block when you tune up is going to help your problem, I'm just trying to get an idea of what you have been doing, I take it that from what you are saying, that the bridge actually tilts when you use the fine tuners, and I assume this was never a problem before you switched string sizes, so my best guess is that you are either missing a spring or your springs are fairly weak and need replaced with something a little stronger......................

Well, do you suppose that going back to .09mm strings will fix the problem? Or maybe the springs should be replaced reguardless. Because before I put .10mm strings on this guitar, I didn't have this problem.

For stronger tension you don't necessarily need to change the springs , you just add more springs , and unscrew a little ... Generally speaking , there should be 3 springs for a .009's gauge , and 4 springs for .010's .

Unless you really like the tone and playability of your .010's gauge , I'd say go back to the .009's .

I gave it one last try before buying .09s and it seems to be working now. I didn't do anything differently... I don't know why it's working now.

I sort of suspect that the problem hasn't completely gone away, but it is working for the moment.

I will put .09s back on it when these strings wear out or break.

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.
