Hey guitar champs.
I just discovered the wonderful sound of chicken pickin, and I want to try to incorperate in my Nuno/Huff technique, but I dont have a clue who is a great chiken pickener, who should I listen to, has any heavy metal giutarist (exept Nuno does a bit) played with this kind of style?

If you can handle listening to a good ol' country boy who absolutely stomps most of the modern shredders, dig up some old stuff by Jerry Reed. He was playing a zillion-notes-per-second nearly 40 years ago, and he was playing clean! No distortion, delay, or fancy effects to hide behind. Even now, his stuff sounds amazing. When he gets into chick'n pick'n, his sense of rhythm will snap your spine! :D (In a good way, doncha know).

In it's simplest form, chicken picking is a series of muted notes followed by a bent unmuted note. This loosely imitates a clucking chicken. (buck-buck-buck-buck-buck-AAACK).

That's the technique, but the style is definitely Country Blues.

??? I always thought it meant when you use multiple fingers to pluck, esp. with picks on them.... But I guess your answer makes more logical sense.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

If you want to hear a country shredder, check out Johnny Hiland, he is awsome, Steve Vai gave him a record deal, his CD comes out next month, but you can get a few mp3's off his website, another great chicken picker is Brent Mason, who really needs to put out another solo album, check around the web for his tune "Hot Wired", great stuff, there are alot of great chicken pickers out there, they just don't get half the hype that alot of the half as talented players get, IMO...................

Actually, as what I think, it is guitar with a banjo approach, where you pick with your fingers (or if you are really good with a pick), so you can get these great jumps between the notes. And ofcourse you have to play in a blues scale, and it sounds really great when you play really really fast.

Yes thats basically it, flat pick and fingers or thumb pick and fingers, alot of palm muting and string snapping with the fingernails, scale wise it's rarely pentatonic, quite a bit of major scale, mixolydian, chromatics, pentatonics usaully get mixed together, major and minor, which I guess you could say is a country blues scale, that may not apply to your application but thats the country picker side of it, a great chicken picker who uses alot of different scales is Steve Morse, haven't listened to any of his stuff for years but really liked his playing on the Dregs albums.........
