Help me with playing Funk
Hey all, can someone tell me where i can go online to get an idea of how to play funk. Or maybe good songs to go off of to teach my self. I'v never taken lessons but I've gotten decent speed and dexterity down with my fingers and am decent with chords, I have never really tried funk and i guess the only band's music i really practice from is Opeth so im kind of at a loss when it comes to other styles of music which is why I am asking, so if anyone could point me in a good direction that would be great, thanks. :)

Well, first funk is too broad I think, what I play is something funk-rock oriented(RHCP, Incubus).
You might try holding the pick not the way you do for shreding, but a little bit more towards the top of your thumb and index finger, and also the top of the pich should be a bit more slanted, so that it attacks the strings with a smaller angle. ALso the movement of your right hand should be mainly from the wrist.
Gosh, this explanation sux...
Just watch how John Frusciante from RHCP plays and you will figure it out. THis technique is very uncomfortable for shredding but, when you have to play funky licks in which you have to accent on the percusive effects, it is very useful.
also, use a thicker pick
hope this helps a little

Play some big syncopated Jazz chords with a wah pedal. It always funks things up.
Also learn some James Brown :)

Anytime I've wanted to get into a new style, the first thing I do is get the music that is the essence of the style, many of the players I like, I find out who influenced them, osmosis is a wonderful thing, for funk, I'd recommend a steady diet of Earth,Wind and Fire, Ohio Players, James Brown ( the hardest working man in show biz ), Parliment and the Funkadelics, etc, timing is very important in funk, hearing the real funk will help alot , ,........
