You might try holding the pick not the way you do for shreding, but a little bit more towards the top of your thumb and index finger, and also the top of the pich should be a bit more slanted, so that it attacks the strings with a smaller angle. ALso the movement of your right hand should be mainly from the wrist.

Just watch how John Frusciante from RHCP plays and you will figure it out. THis technique is very uncomfortable for shredding but, when you have to play funky licks in which you have to accent on the percusive effects, it is very useful.
also, use a thicker pick
