Whenever we're dealing with electric guitar playing, the elephant in the room is always gear and tone. Teachers like me will tell you not to focus too much on that because it's always more powerful to improve your actual playing rather than upgrading and obsessing over your equipment. And while that is certainly true it is also true that it's fun to talk about all the different decisions you can make regarding tone - especially when it comes to lead playing.
So today we will play through a solo that uses four different tones and talk about why the different parts work well with a certain tone. We will use a clean tone, a distorted tone, a fuzz tone and finally an epic delay.
I'll be using my Gretsch Duo Jet for this practice tune, on the bridge pickup, and I'll be running it through a small Fender amp with a bright tone and a little bit of reverb. That's the basic tone for the clean leads. Then for the distorted parts I'm using my usual "Mudhoney" and for the fuzz I'm using this Beetronics pedal called "Vespa". For the delay I'm using this BOSS pedal, but don't think you have to have these exact pedals to play this song. Just learn the parts and see how it all goes with the tones you have available.
