In this tutorial we're going to explore one of my favorite ways to use the pentatonic and blues scale in a rock context. We often learn the vertical patterns, staying in one position at a time, but I find it to be much more musical to move across the neck with a diagonal approach. The slides, as you move up and down, sound great... and the layout makes a lot more sense, when you're seeing how the octaves are repeating from position to position.
I'll be using my Gretsch Duo Jet for this practice tune, and I'll be running it through a small Fender amp with a bright tone and a little bit of reverb. In front of that I'm using this overdrive pedal called "Mudhoney", but you can use any overdriven or distorted tone you have available - and of course any electric guitar with six strings on it.
