Description

In this lesson we are going to focus on how to play the chords that are used during the chorus and solo section of "Dust in the Wind." The choruses are the same each time while also ending a little differently. The solo section allows for some really cool chords to be played to support the dualing violin solos that we will learn in our next lesson.

Chorus

The chords used during our chorus are D/F#, G, and Ami. While only three chords, what helps makes the part musically interesting is how each Ami chord is played with different embellishments. Also, each chorus takes us into a different section; first chorus leading into the second verse, the second taking us into the solo, and the third taking us out of the song. This use of creative song writing is one of the highlights of this song.

Solo Section

The chords used during our solo section are a mixture of new and old. The first half of the solo section (during the "call and response" violins) plays a chord progression that uses Ami7, G/A, F(#4)/A and Dmi7/A. While these chords sound a little intense, they really are a lot of the same shapes and used in a creative way which again, is another musical element that makes this song fun to play. Once the first section ends and the second violin takes over in the solo, our second half begins on rhythm duty. During this section, you simply play the same chord progression as the intro. This takes us into the final chorus and outro of the song.

Now you have all the acoustic guitar parts down for the song!
