Dominating the fretboard

usually when i improv using one of the modes i usually skip around from mode to mode, but for some reason i cant seem to CONNECT the modes into one big scale. Now what ive been trying to do is learn each mode in 3 octaves instead of 2. I watched a Satriani thing on Guitar.com and he said you should be able to play any scale on any string starting on any note (whever the scale be on one string or two!) Now is this necessary, because if it is this i am willing to literally go through and learn every single modal fingering memorize ever scale whether it be an f locrian all on the g string starting at the 10th. But if this isnt necesarry then i wont worry about it. Should I learn all this stuff or will the connection come with time? Suggestoions?
