Playing open strings before chord change

If I am changing from, say, D to Am, and chose to play open strings on the strum immediately before the chord change, should the open strings be played by strumming all six strings, or just the five strings that would normally be strummed when strumming a D.

Hey Linda,

Probably best to keep the open strings you end up playing during the chord change to the top 5 strings instead of all 6. Unless you are intentionally playing the open strings for a desired effect, try practicing the transition so you don't strum any open strings. That will sound the most smooth and clean.

Fastest way to make sure everyone knows you're a beginner is to strum open strings between every chord change. Best to do this sparingly or never.


I wish this forum had a "block user" feature. Possibly I'm not the only one......
