Fat index finger

I'm finding these courses very good and I'm progressing but can someone please tell me why I'm having trouble forming chords with my index finger. Is it that my index finger is too fat because no matter how hard I try, I just can't make a decent sounding chord with my index finger. It's always touching the string above or below or both.

Thanks for that but I think I've found a cure. I keep my nails short on my left hand but I've now really gone to town on my index finger without making it sore and it seems to work better.
