What kind of sound do you want? Crate makes good starter amps for a good price. Also, how big of an amp do you want? (don't buy a rouge amp, those suck).

i'd say go fender. i bought a little 25W Fender Frontman when i got my guitar, it cost about $175 CAD, and it's very powerful and has an okay clean tone.
but if you have $300 to spare, you could get yourself a nice fender amp.
i haven't heard much good about crates, they do look cool, but most guitarists i talk to say they avoid them.

Crate amps are reliable and inexpensive, I'd say they're as good of a starter amp as you can get for a small price.

sonsider a portable thing that can do the headphone thing and then when you play with others you could plug it into their amp or PA. Maybe a Pod or a Boss GT 3 something like that. Pod can be had for about 300 and the GT 3 is on sale now for about 350. they both sound great and there are cheaper things out there that do about the same thing. http://shredlikehell.com http://guitarsoc.homestead.com
