Ok, i've been meaning to buy a multi track recorder to record my own songs without having to go into a studio. I was looking at the Fostex MR8 Recorder. Its an 8 track recorder and uses compact flash memory so its easy to burn and transfer to the computer. Any suggestions as to something better or supporting this idea? The recorder goes for $300 by the way. Thanks

Are you recording just you or a band ? Have you considered how you are going to do drums / vocals ?

For 300 you may want to think about a Tascam 424mK III or similar. I started with a 424mk III and moved up to digital via a Korg D1600.

I now use a Korg D1200 and I'm very happy with it.

It has a USB connection to a PC and I edit and mix using SONAR.

300 is not a lot however I would keep saving and keep an eye on eBay. I picked up my D1200 for about 600 USD

The recording will be mainly for bass, and guitars. Its mainly to have a base for songs. Something i can keep track of songs with nothing major. If the songs ever get picked up by the band i would hit the studio for sure.

You may want to feed a pod or an SM57 into this sucker for the guitar, you can DI the bass straight in
